Storage Space/Price:  

The most attractive feature of ElephantDrive, by far, is the pricing plan. ElephantDrive accounts have unlimited storage room, so you don’t even need to worry about paying for a certain amount of space or going over your allotment.

The differences actually have to do with some of the features you receive. All accounts have automatic backups, web access and sharing capabilities. The cheapest, at $4.95/month will probably be good enough for most users. It covers one computer, maintains a version history for the last 30 days and has a maximum upload limit of 1GB per file. Next, you can get coverage for 4 computers, unlimited version history and a 2GB per file upload limit for $9.95/month.

For business users, there are Pro accounts that have a few different features and a maximum storage limit, although t the storage space is 1TB and 2TB (1,000GB to 2,000GB) so you probably won’t run out of space. For $34.95/month you get 1TB of storage, 10 sub-accounts with protection for 10 computers and backups of the last 20 versions of each file. Paying $99.95/month will get you 20 sub-accounts, protection for 20 computers, 2TB of storage and backups of every single version of a file you’ve ever uploaded.

As we mentioned above, the basic Home Edition is probably enough for most users and certainly has the nicest price. However, if you are looking for a backup option for several different computers, it won’t be enough. If you just want to store a few files, the basic account is good enough. But if you need more protection, choose carefully which type of account you need.

Ease of Use:  

The ElephantDrive service uses a very simple interface program. Once downloaded, it allows you to choose files to upload, download, backup, etc. You can download a file from your account to a computer that doesn’t have the installed ElephantDrive program, but if you want to upload the file again, you’ll need to be on a computer that has the program. While the program can make the file management process easier, we could imagine a few situations where it would also be quite a hassle.

There are options to contact ElephantDrive by phone or email if you have questions. There are simple tutorials that walk you through the process of using the ElephantDrive program and uploading files. The service also has a FAQ that covers most of the questions you might have.

ElephantDrive gets a lot of things right (like the price for unlimited storage) but then throws a few strange curveballs (like upping the price for multiple computer backups when we already have unlimited storage). It has most of the features you’ll want and a simple interface. While it’s not the best, you certainly can do worse.
