Storegate is an internet based hard drive where you can backup and store important files and information. This service is also cellphone compatible so you can backup your mobile’s contact list and calendar. The next time you change phones you won’t have to re-enter every contact.
Storegate’s plans are a little more expensive and this online storage service doesn’t offer large accounts. The free account is 2GB and the largest account, for $31.99 a month, is 40 GB. You may have noticed when looking at other services that these are relatively small and expensive accounts. That's why Storegate didn't rank higher than it did.
Storegate offers a feature we didn’t see in very many other online storage service; My Mobile allows you to backup the data on your cellphone. If your phone gets lost, stolen, broken or you change phones you won’t have to re-enter your calendar dates and your contacts.
Storegate has a free application you can download. The application will help you setup and manage automatic updates.
More standout features include the ability to email files, share files and view your photos from the interface.
When you setup your account, you choose a username and then Storegate assigns you an account number that is required to enter the account and access the data. All of the uploads and downloads are transferred through SSL encryption.
The biggest reason why Storegate didn't rank higher is the pricing plan. Frankly, Storegate offers very little storage space at a considerably higher price when compared to services in the top three slots of this review, like SugarSync or Box.net.
Storegate offers a free 2GB account, which is actually a really great deal if you only need a little storage space to keep files that you want to access from anywhere. But if you need more space than that, it's going to cost you. You will pay $6.99 a month for 5GB, $11.49 for 10GB, $17.99 for 20GB, and $31.99 for 40GB.
Obviously this doesn't sound like a good deal when there are services in this review offering unlimited storage for $4.95 a month. Until Storegate starts offering a better space/price ratio, it will never be able to compete with the high-ranking services in this review.
Storegate has an attractive, easy-to-use interface. After using the service for just a few minutes, you will be well acquainted with and be able to use the features. The file uploads went smoothly and are fast.
Storegate offers help in the form of a user manual and FAQs. You can contact customer support with questions and concerns via email.
Storegate is a user friendly online storage service, but until they can offer more competitive pricing there is no reason to choose Storegate over some of the higher ranking services.
