SugarSync isn’t the cheapest online storage service we reviewed, and while completely unlimited storage would be ideal, the service is still notable in terms of what you get for the cost. Starting at just a few dollars a month, the service provides several storage plans to choose from, ranging from 30GB to 250GB. According to SugarSync, its lowest-tier plan offers enough space to hold 3,000 documents, 6,000 photos and 6,000 songs. SugarSync also offers business plans designed for multi-user accounts. Perhaps the best thing about SugarSync’s business plans is they are scalable. You can add additional storage and users to your account as needed, ensuring you never pay for more storage than you are utilizing.

Arguably the most important feature of any online storage service is its ability to sync your files across multiple computers and mobile devices – and this is one area where SugarSync excels. While many of the services we reviewed sync to a single default folder, SugarSync conveniently lets you specify which existing folders on your desktop you want synced across your various computers and devices; there’s no need to drag-and-drop files into a default sync folder.

However, if you prefer to have a single folder that automatically syncs to all your devices, the service sets up what it calls the Magic Briefcase when installed locally on your computer. Any files placed in the Magic Briefcase are automatically synced to your account.

SugarSync also boasts robust file sharing. You can create public links for files to share on Facebook, Twitter, your blog or in emails. When invited to view files, recipients simply click on the link, no sign-up required. This makes the service a great option for storing photo albums; you can access them anywhere and easily share them with friends and family members. The service even provides a gallery section specifically for storing and sharing photos. You can disable existing links at any time and view how many clicks each of your links has received. You also have the option of creating shared folders, a valuable collaboration tool for small businesses and entrepreneurs.

SugarSync provides most of the other basic but useful features we looked for in our review, including file versioning, unlimited file size upload and automatic backup to ensure your synced files are always up-to-date. While it doesn’t keep as many versions as some other cloud storage services, we do like that SugarSync only counts the most recent version of a file towards your storage limit.

The only things missing from SugarSync’s feature set are file preview and an event log. The absence of these features is hardly a deal breaker, but their inclusion would further enhance the functionality of this online storage service.

SugarSync has comprehensive file support, ranging from music and videos to PDFs and slideshow presentations, and virtually everything in between. You can even store executable files, which may be advantageous if you regularly use more than one computer, such as a work laptop and home desktop.

In addition to a local desktop app, SugarSync allows you to access, view and edit your stored files from any computer or mobile device. The service has apps for all popular mobile devices, including iPhone, iPad, Android, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile devices. You can also sign in to your account from a mobile browser, though if you are on a supported mobile device, the service automatically employs its app for that particular device when you log in to your account.

SugarSync adheres to industry best practices when it comes to data security. All your files are encrypted when they are transferred to and from their servers using Transport Layer Security (TLS), encryption technology for secure web communications is superseding the current industry standard SSL. The files are then stored in encrypted format using 128-bit AES, the same level of encryption employed by government and financial institutions.

Security may not be much of a concern when it comes to photos or music files, but for some customers – primarily businesses – that use the service to store financial records or other sensitive data, such rigorous security protocols are crucial.

When you're sharing files and folders, the service also allows you to set strict folder permissions that dictate how recipients actually use the files. For instance, you can choose to simply allow recipients to view the files, or you can set permissions that allow them to edit the files.

Part of SugarSync’s overall appeal stems from its ease of use; the service is very easy to use for a computer utility. The interface of both the web interface and desktop app are clean and orderly, which fosters easy navigation and utilization. We had our SugarSync account up and running within just a few minutes, and no issues surfaced when we tried syncing and sharing stored files. Accessing SugarSync on various devices worked just as seamlessly.

SugarSync users have access to a variety of customer service options. The software itself has embedded help resources, including an informative getting started guide and setup video. On the SugarSync website, you’ll find user forums, video tutorials and a searchable knowledgebase. You can enter specific inquiries into the search bar and find the answers to your questions. If you still have questions after perusing those resources, you can contact the service directly with an email or through their live chat support system. SugarSync charges an additional monthly fee for unlimited telephone support.

Although the customer service options provided by this online storage service are more than adequate, we were disappointed you have to pay for telephone support. Many competing services include direct technical support via telephone in their storage plans.

SugarSync Summary:
